HBO Considers Cancellation of Jon Snow’s Future Spin-off: What You Need to Know
While Game of Thrones fans eagerly await the series’ development into new productions, the news is not the most positive. That’s because, according to TVLine, HBO, the network behind the global success, has not yet given the green light to any of the spin-off projects, leaving Westeros aficionados thirsty for more. This includes the series focusing on Jon Snow, one of the series’ most iconic characters.
Casey Bloys, CEO and president of HBO, recently threw cold water on viewers’ expectations. Revealing that the long-awaited spin-off centered on Kit Harington’s character, Jon Snow has not yet received official approval. In fact, most of the possible projects derived from the George RR Martin saga have managed to secure production to date.
Bloys highlighted that, although there are always Game of Thrones scripts in production, only one project has progressed so far. “We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring,” revealed the executive, referring to the series based on George RR Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” novels, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight”.
However, the prospects for other spin-offs remain in the shadows, with no official stance from HBO. “I can’t say that there’s anything else in this universe that’s about to get the green light or anything like that,” Bloys added. “But we’re always working on different scripts and ideas.”
The wait is not a big surprise for fans, as HBO has always been careful in expanding the Game of Thrones universe so far. Bloys reinforced that the spin-off projects that move forward will be the strongest, selected based on several measures.
World of possibilities
In a 2021 interview, he explained: “Obviously, we know that George has this incredible world, with all this rich, complicated history and all these characters. So we’ve been trying to be careful about which stories are worth telling. Which would be exciting? What would fans love? ‘Dunk and Egg‘ is one of them, but not the only one.”
Despite the impasse, there was a ray of hope in 2023. George RR Martin revealed that Kit Harington is set to reprise his role as Jon Snow in a spin-off called “Snow” (working title). Martin stated that Harington was deeply involved in the project, and the news was corroborated by Emilia Clarke. At the time, she confirmed that Harington had shared details of the project, stating that “it’s really happening.”
In addition to “Snow,” there are other potential spin-offs in development at HBO, although none of them have received official recognition to date. Among them, is a prequel focused on the reign of Aegon I Targaryen. A series centered on Nymeria, and a drama about Velaryon. Now, it remains to be seen which of them will see the light of day or, better said, screens.
